HOW TO MAKE A POLYPHONIC RINGTONE (SP-MIDI) FROM MIDI SONG

Instructions by m4dj for the PsmPlayer v4.50e which can be found on my home page.

Hi !

I make this page because not everyone knows how to convert midis to sp-midi format and because in a program that you can find on my home page, PsmPlayer v3.80e... the help file is not included.

Here is the description how to use this applications and make a polyphonic tune for your Nokia phone.

I am an owner of model 3510i, so I will write the instructions for this phone.

Anyway this application can be use also for other types of phones  and the usage of the application depends of  how much tones our GSM phone can

support. For example :

A) Our phone support polyphonic tunes of 4  tones (example: nokia 3510 il nokia 7210 il nokia 6610)

B) Our phone support polyphonic tunes of 16 tones (nokia 7650)
D) Our phone support polyphonic tunes of 3 tones (panasonic GD76 e GD67)
E) Our phone support tones  in format  SMAF or .mmf  like samsung t100, s100, n600, n620 and all other Samsung phones that support polyphonic tones.

Nokia procedure (nokia 3510 il nokia 7210 il nokia 6610)

The following instruction are similar for all mentioned types.

Note that on Nokia 3510i,  polyphonic ringtones (sp-midi) files can not be larger than 7 Kb. This is the limit of polyphonic ringtone.

First you have to find some midis that you want to convert. That is not a problem and normally midis can be found and downloaded free.

Ok dude !

1. Fisrt you have to download the PsmPlayer if you dont have it yet. Its free. Click HERE to download or skip this step and go to step 2.

2. Import your midi : File --> Open --> choose your midi file.

Here is the example:

(Picture 1)

As you can see, this midi is composed from 8 channels or tones + drums that are not marked as channel.  (Picture 1).

This midi cant be use on our Nokia 3510i, because it have more than 4 different channels.

Once you have opened your selected midi you can play it to hear how its sounds and than you can decide what part of midi you want to use for a polyphonic ringtone.

To play a midi press play button.

Bellow all buttons we found small squares with numbers. (Picture 2)

(Picture 2)

3. We have to modify the imported file by selecting maximum 4 tones and we have to select what part of midi to use.

The picture shows the selection of 4 prefered tones.  (Picture 2) Anytime you can play your midi and hear If its sounds stiil good or not.

Window with Dr note and from 11 to 16 with Sd is the drum note. You can also check the window Dr after the channel 9 and the ringtone will also work.

4.When you select 4 tones you can hear the difference, because a lot of instruments are missing. The channels 5,7,8 are not used any more, but the ringtone is still better than a monophonic ringtone.

Note that is not necessary to use select the channels 1,2,3,4. We can select other desire channels but not more than 4. Select channels that produce the best sound.

5. We have to optimize the dimensions of the midi (not larger then 7 KB).

You can cut the front part, rear, or you can select the part between two parts of song. This can be done using the symbol scissors and very exactly.

When you click on this button, the window will apear. (Picture 3)

(Picture 3)

Here you can choose what part of song to use, what part to eliminate.....

6. When you done, select file and go to "create MIDI". The window will apear. Here you can add a name to your ringtone... you can choose also the limit in the size of midi. (7KB max).  Then click ok and save it to the disk. Now you have your polyphonic ringtone ;)

UPLOADING THE POLYPHONIC RINGTONE TO YOUR PHONE

Once you make a polyphonic tune you can download it via wap or GPRS. In this case you have to own your wap site or the other possibility are:

1. If you have a FTP and a home page, you can upload them on it like all other files and then you can point a direct link  from your phone to your address on your site and to your midi file. On my home page you will find the example....

2.The other way is to register on some free service that offers the possibility to upload polyphonic tunes and other applications and then you can download your uploads using your WAP or GPRS with your login.

I can recommend you to use a free very good service named "Coolservice.dk" The address is http:/www.coolservice.dk

There you can also upload your games (separated jar and jad file extensions) and then download it using wap.

TIPS:

Code to enable Vibrate and LED : (Samsung)
Start PSM Player. At the top menu bar, click 'Help' then click 'About'. Key in '186'. Now when you 'Create SMAF 16 or 40 chord', there will be options to enable Vibrate and LED coupling. The rest is up to you!

Personaly I didn't test if work, bacause I have a Nokia phone...

NOTES:

Mybe  the played ringtone on your nokia will not be the same as you heard in the application.

Some tones are not supported by various phones and some instruments will not play.

For the end:

In the application you can also try the automatic modification of midis to 4 tones. This can be done using an option "create Smaff"

Good luck and I hope my instructions will help you to create the desire ringtone.
